What cookies are
Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit the site. They are how the site remembers anything between one page and the next.
Essential
Necessary for the site to work at all: authentication, security and session management. These cannot be turned off, because turning them off would mean you could not stay signed in.
Analytics
These tell us how people move through the site so we can fix what is not working. You can turn them off in Settings.
Functional
These remember your preferences: language, theme, and the other choices you have made. You can turn them off in Settings.
Managing them
Cookie preferences live in your browser settings and on our own Settings page. Turning some of them off will change how parts of the service behave.
